Dr. De Aguiar, born in Johannesburg, South Africa, completed his matriculation in 1979. His academic journey led him to the University of the Witwatersrand Medical School, where he earned a BSc degree in medical physiology and biochemistry in 1983 and an MBBCh (cum laude, with distinction) in 1986. His dedication to excellence in the medical field was evident as he received accolades such as the Gencor prize for achieving the highest overall aggregate during his fifth year of medical training in 1985, the Kurt Gillis Award for Psychiatry for his outstanding performance as an all-round graduate, and the Paddy Pearlman Scholarship for academic excellence in the same year. His commitment to knowledge and research continued to shine as he was honoured with the Nestle Prize for Paediatrics (1986), the David Lurie Research Scholarship (1992), and the 3M/ Ethicon Awards (1993, 1994).
Dr. De Aguiar’s early career included a Senior House Officer position in 1988 within the Department of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Hand Surgery at Wits University. In 1989, he took on the role of Registrar in Head, Neck, and Breast Surgery at Tygerberg Hospital, coupled with a teaching position in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Cape Town. In the subsequent years, from 1990 to 1991, he immersed himself in registrar training in general surgery under the guidance of Prof. J T Terblanche at Groote Schuur Hospital, gaining valuable experience in trauma, surgical ICU, paediatric surgery, burns, and cardio-thoracic surgery.
Returning to Johannesburg, Dr. De Aguiar completed his plastic surgery training at Wits, achieving a Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of South Africa in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery in 1994 and a Master of Medicine Degree (Plastic Surgery) in 2005. His commitment to excellence and continuous learning led him to obtain additional microsurgical training in 1991, and he has been an advanced trainer for Botox since 1999.
Dr. De Aguiar’s career path included roles as the Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery at Helen Joseph Hospital and as a consultant Plastic Surgeon at Charlotte Maxeke and Baragwanath Hospitals. In 1997, he ventured into private practice and currently operates from Netcare Waterfall City Hospital in Midrand.
He remains an active member of the Association of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons of South Africa (APRSSA) and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS). Dr. De Aguiar’s dedication to academic and research pursuits is evident through his involvement in numerous research projects and his extensive portfolio of local and international publications and presentations. In his leisure time, Dr. De Aguiar indulges his artistic interests, including photography and oil painting.
