Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Cosmetic eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, corrects sagging eyelids and puffiness around the eyes, which may be contributing to a tired or sad appearance. These symptoms are usually the result of the aging process but can also be inherited.
Excess skin and muscle from both the upper and lower eyelids may be removed as necessary, and underlying fatty tissue that produces bagginess can be selectively removed or repositioned. It can help improve vision in older patients who have hooding of their upper eyelids. The procedure therefore improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both to give a rejuvenated appearance to the surrounding area of the eyes, making you look more rested and alert.
Blepharoplasty surgery is customized for every patient, depending on his or her particular needs. It can be performed alone, involving the upper, lower, or both eyelid regions, or in conjunction with other surgical procedures of the eye, face, brow, or nose. In some patients who have looseness between the lower eyelid and the eyeball, consideration for tightening of the lower eyelid (canthoplasty/canthopexy) at the time of blepharoplasty may be recommended.
Eyelid surgery cannot stop the process of aging. It can, however, diminish the look of loose skin and bagginess in the eyelid region.
Blepharoplasty will not remove crow’s feet or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under the eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows.
The particular technique that will be recommend will depend on many factors, such as the amount of excess fat and skin in the eyelid areas, the position of the eyebrows, and the condition of the muscle around the eyelids.
For upper eyelid surgery, generally an incision is hidden in the natural fold of the upper eyelid and extends slightly beyond the outer corner into the laugh lines or other existing creases. Through this incision, excess skin and fatty tissue is removed. Because the incision follows the natural contour of the upper eyelid, it is well camouflaged when healed.
For lower eyelid surgery, often an incision is hidden just beneath the lower lashes. Through this incision, excess skin, muscle and fat is removed, or fat may be redistributed to eliminate puffiness and bulges.
Other adjustments to correct special problems such as muscle laxity may be performed. As in upper eyelid surgery, the incision is well camouflaged by natural creases. In some cases, the best approach for removing excess fat is through an incision placed inside the lower eyelid. This technique requires no external incision but cannot be used to remove excess skin.
- Brighter, more youthful, alert and rested appearance.
- Incisions will fade over a number of months until they become barely visible in most cases.
- Significant complications from aesthetic eyelid surgery are infrequent.
- Upper eyelid surgery is usually performed on an outpatient basis whereas patients having lower lid surgery may require an overnight stay in hospital.
- In the early post-operative period, it may be normal for your eyelids to feel sensitive, tight and scratchy and have a degree of light sensitivity. Most symptoms are controlled by simple pain killing medication, cold compresses, and lubricant gels.
- The patient will be able to resume most normal activities within 10 to 14 days with impact exercises delayed for about 4 to
- High level of patient satisfaction.
- Taking proper precautions in the sun as well as keeping your body weight stable will help you maintain your results over the long term.
- Every surgical procedure carries some risk. Potential complications include haematoma (an accumulation of blood under the skin that may require removal), infection, and reactions to anaesthesia.
- Bruising, mild swelling, blurriness, and a tight sensation around the eyes are common, short-lived symptoms following surgery.
- Following surgery, there can be a feeling of dryness or irritation in the eye that requires treatment.
- Possibility of temporary decrease in sensation of the eyelid skin or impaired eyelid function sometimes requires additional surgery.
- High blood pressure, thyroid problems, diabetes, allergies, or conditions like dry eye may increase the risks associated with eyelid surgery.
